I had only heard of Kari Mullis during covid (I was a normie muggle for the HIV era, and only during covid have I learned about the pseudoscience behind virology). He's a weird dude. As you point out, the public tends to equate weird, dull, incoherent, robotic, etc characteristics in these front men as some form of quirky intelligence. I appreciate the linked article on Kari, and have been slowly understanding the layers of fraudulent pseudoscience/ coming at the pseudoscience from several different directions. Even though I have a bachelors of science (BS😄) degree in biology, I always felt so much miraculous awe about the biological world.
